Smart Cities Startup Weekend Recap

This past week of June 7th-9th, Startup Weekend took off at the Geekdom Event Centre. Participants came in groups, totaling nine, competed against each other with ideas stretching from disaster relief systems to sustainable advancements. Each team had the opportunity to present their startup ideas to a panel of judges which included Brian Dillard (COSA CIO), Charles Woodin (Geekdom CEO), Sarah Helmy (CEO & Founder of Tribu), and Sumita Jonak (Research Engineer at USAA).

Friday night, each team got to pitch their ideas for 60 seconds to each other and all participants got the chance to decide which ideas they would like to take part in. Saturday was a day full of creating and planning their business plans.

Charged Up

Jonathan Fleming, Liza Charo, Ivan Cisnero, and Nancy Greathouse-Hill, were awarded 1st place for their idea that a partnership with the city of San Antonio and/or with CPS to aid with electrical cars and their usage of electricity at one time. This will not only save a lot of energy for the city but it will also make the demand for electricity more even throughout the day.

Protect Your Assets (PYA)

Nancy Ramos, Cecilia Ramos Sunchild, Adalyn Sedano, Laura Prochaska, Ana Gomez, and Jennifer Walker, were awarded 2nd place with their idea of creating a web page that will make the process of procurement easy and seamless for the public.

Recasa

Chris Moken, John Chavez, Isabella Beltri, Jaya Krishna Chintala, Jordyn Fetter, David Novogrodsky, and Isaac Buitrago, were awarded 3rd place with their web page that will allow people to find/purchase salvageable materials as simple and instant as possible.

Garden Tech

Matthew Munroe, Colby Doyal, and Andre Gomez, an honorable mention, had the idea of an app that would increase engagement and final purchases throughout farmer markets.

All nine teams brought forth wonderful ideas and the judges contributed their strong feedback. Based on statistics, only <12% of startup companies will further their business. Startup Weekend is an event that offers anyone a chance to create, pitch and gain feedback on business plans over a matter of a few days.
